Maybe that headline seems like a contradiction in terms, but I've just seen a Flash-based site "splash" intro that would have to be my nomination for the best I've seen: the one for Device Fonts. (Not that it's too strong a field of competitors.)
Maybe a better way to put it is, Device Font's intro is at least entertaining in itself, and something of a technical stand-out. (How'd he do all that?) Conventional wisdom is that most visitors immediately hit "skip intro" when they see a Flash site intro loading, but this is one that I would watch over again.
The bigger question facing the genre still hasn't gone away, though: What exactly does it achieve? At least for a design company, presenting a strong statement of visual style — even if it does nothing else — isn't entirely off-topic.
So, what's your nomination? Anyone ever seen any they actually liked?
