When I was in college we used to have discussions around the breakfast table about what could possibly be funny about the comic strip "Gasoline Alley". We finally decided that the only explanation for the bizarre behavior of the characters was that "Gasoline Alley" was not a comic strip at all, but a covert communications mechanism for some espionage group. The strip just never made sense.
Apparently someone has come to the same conclusion about SPAM. And someone else has actually created an application that allows you to encode a secrete message into a SPAM e-mail.
